This is #3 in the series so go check out Reasons to Make a Rag Rug and How Much Fabric will I Need and then come on back. I'll be here waiting to share with you about how long it takes to make a rag rug.

How long does it take to make a rag rug?

Well if you are easily distracted like I am then a LONG time.  Seriously I love my rug project but when I got WAY into teaching myself to knit then I let my poor rug just sit there while I played with all the pretty yarn.

How much time does it take to make a rag rug?

Sigh.  Too many projects!

I didn't have an answer to the question "How long does it take to make a rug?" when a friend asked me so I decided to time myself in making a small rug.  Of course the larger the rug the longer it would take.  For proof I have videoed myself working on this little rug.

This first video is the creation of the center rows or base of the rug.  .

It took a little more than 3 minutes for a 6 inch base.  The base plus the next row (which took 7 minutes) are the ones that take the most time and concentration. All the rows after that are pretty mindless unless you are changing colors.

Work in your downtime!

Then working as I watched TV, the rug went from nothing to 13 inch long pretty quickly.  In another hour an a half work session gave me 3 more rows.  Each successive row is longer so it takes longer to do the "outside" of the rug but I estimate that I can finish this up in a couple of evenings of work while vegging with my kids watching a movie or two.  I will report back here when I finish!

Experience makes a difference

I have made 2 whole rugs and I'm halfway through a third.  This is not my first round of rug making so it will be easier and faster for me than it is for a novice.  But once you get the hang of it then it really isn't hard.  Like knitting you can just put it down and come back to it when you have time.

Make rugs in the cooler weather!

Once a rug gets big, I will only pull it out when the weather is cooler.  It's like having a blanket on your lap!  Which is great when the snow flies and not so great when it is 90 outside.

You can try working with your rug at a table so it is not directly on you.  That would make working in warmer weather much more doable!

Don't miss the next post in the series!  It's all about making the base of your rug.
